Crochet Foundations

This course is intended to introduce you to the basics of crocheting through interactive sessions so that you can follow patterns and make everything you ever wanted!

Learning Goals 🌟

  • Learn the slip knot and the basic chain technique.
  • Learn the basic stitches (US terminology): single, double, triple, half double, slip stitches.
  • Learn all the stitches you need to make amigurumi: magic circle, increase, invisible decrease and fasten off.
  • Learn to knot 2 yarns together.
  • Learn to read crochet patterns.

By the end of this course, you will have all the basics you need to start you off on your personal crochet learning journey.

  • Four weeks
  • 1.5 hours each session
  • 100% synchronous learning and practice time

By the end of this course, you will have made your own:

  • Small swatch of basic stitches
  • Granny square
  • Small ball
  • Bee mini amigurumi

Is this course for you? ❓

  • This course is aimed at absolute beginners.
  • You can have some crochet background, but be aware this is a basic course.

Syllabus / Schedule 📅

Week 1

  • Learn the slip knot and the basic chain technique.
  • Learn the basic stitches (US terminology): single, double, triple, half double, slip stitches.
  • In-class project: Make a back and forth square with all the stitches we learned.

Week 2

  • Learn to knot 2 yarns together.
  • Learn to read a pattern.
  • In-class project: Read an easy pattern for a granny square and follow it to completion.

Week 3

  • Learn to make the magic circle.
  • Learn to increase, invisible decrease and fasten off.
  • In-class project: Learn the beginnings of amigurumi making by making a small ball.

Week 4

  • Learn to change colours.
  • FINAL in-class project: We will make an amigurumi bee together.

Prerequisites

You must have all the materials you might need:

  • a crochet hook (any size you're comfortable with. Not too big and not too small. Any around H or 4-5mm is fine.)
  • appropriate sized yarn for that hook (any worsted weight / aran should be fine)
  • pair of scissors
  • needle with hole appropriate for your yarn
  • stitch markers (real, paper clips, earrings, small safety pin or similar)
  • a bit of stuffing
  • amigurumi eyes (optional)
  • patience and good humour

Feel free to ask for recommendations on what to buy in the forum.
